In the summer of 1969, Tim Marsh (Linfield Class of 1970) was attending Linfield summer session in McMinnville.
Linfield's Dillin Hall cafeteria needed lunchtime student workers in its steam room, where dishes were washed and dried. He and fellow students signed up.
One day someone came into the steam room and told them Mike Barrow (Class of 1968), with whom we attended Linfield, died in Vietnam. (He was killed June 23, 1969, in Long Khanh, Vietnam, serving as a U.S. Army infantry soldier.) "We were shocked. I'll never forget our sad reaction," Marsh said.
Mike's is one of more than 58,000 names of American service members on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial "Wall" in Washington, D.C. They lost their lives in the Vietnam War. From Prineville, Oregon, Mike is buried at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
(Some remember Mike as a Linfield football and baseball athlete.)
Why mention this now? Tonight 9/17/2017. a 10-part ‘The Vietnam War’ documentary debuts on PBS television.
