Sharon Shepherd: First woman athlete in Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame

1960 Linfield College graduate Sharon Shepherd was an athlete of exceptional ability, from her youth in Oregon's Lane County, until she competed for the final time six years ago, at age 57.



In 2001, she will be the first woman athlete and the third woman to be enshrined in the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame since was founded in 1998.

The Oct. 19, 1967, Linfield Review student newspaper said time was, Oct. 5, 1956, “When a Linfield coed came back to school with a suitcase of barbells. She was Sharon (Shepherd),  shotput specialist, and all around athlete.”

LINFIELD’S MOST NOTED GAL athlete, Sharon Shepherd, represented the United States in Chicago last weekend as a member of the women’s track team in the international competition with Poland. She will also compete against the Russian teams in Palo Alto in a couple of weeks.

Sharon (of Mapleton, Oregon will be back close to home in the fall, as she has accepted a position on the staff at North Bend junior high as an instructor in health and physical education. During the past school year Miss Shepherd taught and took graduate work at Ohio University.
