MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A Linfield College resident advisor who played linebacker for the football team died after being stabbed multiple times Saturday near campus, and the suspect, who returned to the scene of the crime, was shot dead by police, officials said.
The stabbing was reported Saturday at 11:08 p.m., police said.
Officers responded to the 7-Eleven, which is open 24 hours a day, near the intersection of Highway 99 West and Southwest Fellows Street. The 7-Eleven is located across the street from the campus entrance on Southwest Founders Way.
When officers arrived they found the 20-year-old student had been stabbed multiple times with a knife by an unknown suspect, police said. The suspect fled before officers arrived.
Suspect returns to crime scene as medics render first aid to victim while officers and paramedics were on scene at the 7-Eleven, Yamhill County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Tim Svenson said, the suspect came back to the scene.
A witness to the stabbing told officers, “There he is,” Svenson said, and added the suspect refused to put the knife down.
The confrontation “resulted in the McMinnville officers shooting the suspect,” Svenson said. The suspect was transported by ambulance to Willamette Valley Medical Center where he later died, police said.
“At this point, we can’t show any connection between the two individuals,” Svenson said. He went on to describe the incident as a “complete random act.”
Police have not released the name of the suspect. They said he does live in the Yamhill County area and does not appear to have an extensive criminal history.
Victim identified by college shown in a photo taken at the Washington State University Business Plan Competition in April 2013.
Linfield College President Dr. Thomas L. Hellie identified the victim as Parker Moore, a sophomore majoring in business management from Woodinville, Wash.
“We are all still in shock, but we know that it is important to speak to counselors, to support each other as we mourn, and to think about and pray for Parker’s family and friends. We have lost a valued, important member of our community and all of us share in the grief,” Hellie said in a prepared statement.
Moore was a resident advisor at Anderson Hall and a linebacker on the Linfield Football team.
At the time of his recruitment in April 2013, the university said Parker was voted 2012 Defensive Player of the Year by his high school teammates and also elected first team all King County, Washington Conference outside linebacker.
Moore was transported to Oregon Health & Science University by helicopter where he later died, police said.
Alert sent to students
The college sent out an emergency alert around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. It advised students, staff and faculty that public safety had been notified that the stabbing suspect was at large and that there were
reported of gunshots in the area.
The alert urged everyone on campus to remain inside their residence, classroom or office with the doors and windows closed.
The order was later lifted once McMinnville police told campus safety there was no longer a threat.
Counselors will be available for students and staff in 103 Walker Hall from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, and additional counselors also will be on hand for the foreseeable future, Hellie said.
Linfield College had a home football game Saturday where they beat Pacific University 59-0.
“I don’t think this had anything to do with the college at all,” Svenson said.
Investigation underway
The Yamhill County Major Crimes Response Team is investigating the incident. The three officers involved with the shooting have yet to be interviewed by police and therefore, their names have not been released publicly.
