Longtime Linfield College history professor Vince Jacobs died Sunday, Jan. 7. He was 81.

Jacobs taught at Linfield from 1967 to 2002. He remained engaged with the college following his retirement.

For many years, he continued leading classes through the college’s Division of Continuing Education. He had been involved with the DCE since it started.

Jacobs, whose focus was on European history, held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oregon and a doctorate from the University of Washington. He had traveled all over the world and led Linfield classes in England, Vienna, Hong Kong, Eastern Europe and other places.

His memoir, “Because I’m Chinese: Conflict, Controversy and Paradox in Contemporary China,” told of his experiences in that country.

After retiring, Jacobs also continued teaching, though in a less traditional setting. Aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, Nimitz and other Navy ships, he taught American history and western civilization to military personnel.

Jacobs also served on numerous faculty committees over the years. President Thomas Hellie said he was one of several professors who helped steer the course of the college, especially in the 1970s.

He enjoyed working with students, friends said. He also was an avid reader who loved to fish, write and attend Wildcat athletic events.

He is survived by his wife, Norma, and other relatives.
