Researching sports events a "long time ago" is fraught with problems. But, nonetheless .... Wildcatville research shows ..

... the Linfield VARSITY at George Fox VARSITY football game on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, will be the first time there's been a Linfield VARSITY at George Fox VARSITY football game on George Fox's (formerly Pacific College, formerly George Fox College) home football field since a game played Friday, Nov. 23, 1923, in Newberg. (Linfield won that game, 16-0.)

To be specific, that Nov. 23, 1923, game was PACIFIC COLLEGE (don't confuse it with Pacific University of Forest Grove) vs. LINFIELD COLLEGE. (In 1922, McMinnville College became Linfield College. And, in that same year, 1922, Linfield resumed playing football after a 16 year hiatus -- 1906 to 1921 -- because the Linfield Board of Trustees discontinued the sport, deeming it too dangerous.)

It's important to indicate VARSITY since Wildcatville research shows many games between Linfield JUNIOR VARSITY vs. George Fox VARSITY over the years.

How many years is it between Friday, Nov. 23, 1923
and Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015? =

91 years, 11 months, 8 days excluding the end date.

(Linfield defeated George Fox, 24-0, in the game played in Newberg on Oct. 31, 2015)

According to the Nov. 28, 1923, The Crescent, Pacific College's student newspaper, the Nov. 23, 1923, football game was played on "one of the wettest days and muddiest fields in the memory of the oldest old-timer. Nonetheless a big bunch of spectators enthusiastically ate peanuts and cheered the teams and everyone almost forgot the sea of mud and water."

The Crescent Nov. 28, 1923, story goes on to say, "This kind of weather we need not be mentioned to Oregonians. The boys fought hard the game through. They greatly appreciated a loyal student body who backed them from under their umbrellas. George Mullinger (-- who played left half for Pacific --) forgot Linfield men never carried umbrellas so he gave them a good shower when he brought his right foot down in the puddle. He's not afraid of getting his feet wet."
