Varsity football teams
of Linfield College of McMinnville and George Fox University of Newberg played
against each other in the first game of Linfield’s first football season in
1896. George Fox won, 54-0.
George Fox discontinued football starting with the 1970 season and resumed playing in 2014. Linfield leads the series of varsity games, 9-4-1.
It was a span of 72 years between the most recent Linfield vs. George Fox varsity games. Both played at Linfield, in 1942, Linfield won, 50-0. In 2014, Linfield won, 59-0, in McMinnville. In 2015, Linfield won, 24-0, in Newberg.
The first three games
of the series -- in 1896, 1897 and 1898 -- were won by George Fox. Linfield won in
1900 and George Fox in 1901. The 1905 game was a tie. From 1906 through 1921,
Linfield’s Board of Trustees banned football at the college, deaming it too violent.
- When Linfield opened, it was McMinnville College. Likewise, George Fox had different names before its current name. When the two teams played in that first Linfield football game in 1894, George Fox was Pacific College, not to be confused with Pacific University of Forest Grove. Later it was George Fox College and now its George Fox University.
- Driving distance between campuses of Linfield and George Fox is about 15 miles. The colleges/cities are located in Oregon’s Yamhill County. In case you wonder, UPS and PLU, both in Tacoma (except PLU is actually in Parkland) and Pierce County, are about 12 miles apart.
- From 1894 to 1942 the football games between Linfield and George Fox were with varsity teams, although the 1942 Linfield team which competed with George Fox had only freshman and sophomore players. (The juniors and seniors on the Linfield team were given the game off to rest for an upcoming contest.) After World War II, starting in 1947, the football games between the schools were with Linfield JV versus George Fox varsity teams. That series of Linfield JV (identified in some stories as “Wildkittens”) vs. George Fox varsity games ran from 1947 to 1963. During some of those seasons, the two schools played each other twice or sometimes three times. There were 27 seasons when football teams of the two schools did not play each other.

1906-1921 – In summer 1906, Linfield Board of Trustees suspends
football because the sport was too
violent. There was no Linfield football in 1906 and until the sport resumed in

According to the Nov. 14, 1923, issue of The Crescent, Pacific College (P.C., now GFU) student newspaper, a "game with Linfield at P.C., Nov. 23 will be played." A story in the Nov. 28, 1923, Crescent seems to indicate the game was played Friday, Nov. 23, 1923, in Newberg on the P.C. field. This was apparently the last time Linfield VARSITY and George Fox VARSITY played a football game on GFU's home field in Newberg until the Oct. 31, 2015, game, Linfield at GFU.
According to the Nov. 14, 1923, issue of The Crescent, Pacific College (P.C., now GFU) student newspaper, a "game with Linfield at P.C., Nov. 23 will be played." A story in the Nov. 28, 1923, Crescent seems to indicate the game was played Friday, Nov. 23, 1923, in Newberg on the P.C. field. This was apparently the last time Linfield VARSITY and George Fox VARSITY played a football game on GFU's home field in Newberg until the Oct. 31, 2015, game, Linfield at GFU.
