"However, Bronco football’s first effort as a four-year school was an embarrassing thud. Playing its 1968 home opener -- on real grass at old Bronco Stadium -- what was then Boise State College was upset, 17-7, by the Linfield College Wildcats."
For the record, the game had an 8 p.m. Mountain Time kickoff and was played Saturday, Sept. 21, 1968. It was the first game as head football coach for Ad Rutschman of Linfield and Tony Knap for Boise State.
A June 13, 2010, article, “ ‘Boise State has grown up in a hurry,” in the Idaho Statesman daily newspaper of Boise, Idaho, indicates Boise State athletics has no respect for Linfield. The article includes, “Boise State athletic director Gene Bleymaier pointed at the trophy cases in one corner of the Allen Noble Hall of Fame on Friday. ‘Look at these (commemorative) footballs of teams we were playing in the late '60s and early '70s,’ he said. Teams like Linfield, Westminster, Whitworth, Eastern Oregon, Hiram Scott and the College of Idaho. "Fast forward to 2011," Bleymaier said, ‘and put BYU, TCU, Utah, Air Force on that same football. It's a remarkable story and the credit goes to this community.’ "
- Wildcatville salutes Jojobro for recognizing Linfield football as a powerhouse. In a story, “Lyle's House: 1950-1969,” about Boise State football posted Aug. 12, 2010 at BroncoCountry.com, Jojobro wrote, “The 1968 Broncos, led by quarterback Harold Zimmerman and running back Abe Brown and linebacker Steve Svitak, started the season with a loss at home to Linfield College, an NAIA powerhouse."
- And, speaking of Boise State, see below. This is a Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, page 5D, letter editor to the Moscow, Idaho–Pullman, Wash., Daily News. (The letter writer is from Troy, Idaho.)
Still a junior college
Recent boneheaded remarks by the president of Boise State University disparaging the University of Idaho and Moscow are not only prima fascia evidence that the guy is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but reinforces many UI associates sense that while BSU certainly has a terrific football program as its core, the institution is still Boise Junior College.
