Linfielder Bob Laycoe (Class of 1968) will be become a new member of the University of Toronto (U of T) Sports Hall of Fame On May 28, 2025.
His identical twin
brother, Dr. Bryan Laycoe, who lives in Clark County, Washington, said the evening
enshrinement ceremony will be held on the U of T St. George campus.
Bob will be one of
three in the ‘builders” category. Three others are in the athlete category.
Bob died Dec. 28,
2020, at age of 73 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease.
The Brothers Laycoe attended
Portland’s Cleveland High School and competed in athletics. Bryan went on to
Lewis & Clark College. At Linfield, Bob was an outstanding football player for
Coch Paul Durham. He also wrestled for the Wildcats.
Their father, Hal
Laycoe, was well known as coach of the Portland Buckaroos of the Western Hockey
League.
Among those attending
the Toronto event will be Bob’s widow, Suzanne, and their granddaughter Stevie.

A
leader of young men, Bob Laycoe served as head coach of the
Varsity Blues football program from 1988 to 2001. Across 14 seasons, he
accumulated 54 total wins, including one of the most special moments in U of T
athletics history, the 1993 Vanier Cup. Leading the Varsity Blues to a national
championship, Laycoe delivered a record of 11-1 during the historic season,
including a 24-16 Yates Cup victory versus the Western Mustangs, a 26-16
Churchill Bowl win over Concordia, and a thrilling 37-34 Vanier Cup win against
the Calgary Dinos. He was additionally named OUAA coach of the year in 1992 was
selected as a modern era coach for the U of T football programs all-century
team.
