 DEATH TAKES ATHLETE AND EDUCATOR DEL COURSEY

Delbert E. "Del" Coursey, an athlete, coach, educator and businessman with deep local roots, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007, at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland. He was 76.

Private family services will be held in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, with the Rev. Ron Mulles officiating. Private family interment will be conducted at the Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum. No public memorial services are scheduled.

Born April 4, 1930, in Devol, Okla., he was the son of Hobart Louis and Gladys (Denton) Coursey. He graduated from Elmira High School, then enrolled at the University of Oregon on a baseball scholarship. He later transferred to Linfield College, where he played baseball while earning a teaching degree.

After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army and Air Force for three years. Following his discharge, he played professional baseball for five years. He then returned to Linfield, where he earned his master's degree.

He married Dixie Lee Alcorn on June 15, 1951, in Murraysville, Tenn.

Mr. Coursey took his first teaching job at Memorial Elementary School in McMinnville. He later taught at Willamina High School.

He served as superintendent of schools in Valsetz for three years, then returned to Willamina in the dual role of high school principal and superintendent.

He built Shakey's Pizza Parlor in McMinnville. He owned a cattle ranch near Pike and several acres of walnut, filbert and prune orchards in the Dundee area.

He served as an assistant baseball coach at Linfield in 1966, when it won its first national championship. As such, he gained entry to the Linfield and Oregon sports halls of fame.

In 1973, Mr. Coursey became a teacher and baseball coach at Oregon State University. In the early 1980s, he taught education at Western Oregon University, where he also helped with the baseball program.

He became school superintendent in Monroe in 1985. He moved back to McMinnville in 1988, but continued to serve as superintendent in Monroe until 1995. After his retirement, he held interim superintendent jobs in Alsea and Long Creek.

Mr. Coursey enjoyed golf, racquetball and other sports. He loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter, three brothers, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Tom, and sister, Virginia.

Dixie Coursey

Private mausoleum interment is planned for Dixie Coursey of McMinnville. Von Palmer will officiate. Arrangements are being handled by Macy & Son Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Coursey died at home on Friday, Sept. 19, 2008. He was 76.

Born in Clovis, Calif., on June 24, 1932, she was the daughter of Richard Vernon and Verna (Russell) Alcorn. She grew up in Fresno, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School.

She met Del Coursey during a tour in the Air Force. The couple married on June 15, 1951, in Murraysville, Tenn.

After her discharge, she earned a degree in education from Linfield College, graduating in 1961. She taught school in Yamhill County for a year, then in Valsetz for three years, before returning to McMinnville in 1965.

She and her husband owned a Shakey's Pizza Parlor in McMinnville. They also owned a cattle ranch in Pike and orchards in the Dundee area.

They moved to Corvallis in 1973, but returned to McMinnville in 1979. She and her husband owned and operated Imperial Distributors for several years after their return.

She enjoyed reading and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Coursey is survived by a son, Rick of Baker City; a daughter, Gerri Connolly of Salem; two sisters, LaNell Haxton of Sun City, Calif., and Barbara Johnson of Murrieta, Calif.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2007; two brothers, Gary Alcorn and Donnell Hord; and a sister, Irita Magill.
