Linfield (1966 Football) Offense Packs Punch

By Dick Fishback, Oregonian, Sept. 9, 196

McMINNVILLE (Special) — “We're going to be strong on offense, but we'll have to scramble on defense," Coach Paul Durham surmised, looking over a field full of Linfield football players.

This year’s edition of the Wildcats will have to go same to equal last year's showing, but a stronger offense just might be enough to compensate for some holes in the defense.

Durham’s contingent went all the way to the national NAIA Champion Bowl last season, winning a nerve-shattering semifinal over Sul Ross {State of Texas, 30-27, then falling, 33-0, in the bowl to powerful St. John’s of Minnesota.

Griffin Switches

There’s going to be some shuffling in the offense. But the moves should just add strength. Rogers Ishizu (170) the bouncy wingback, has been switched to halfback to give him more chances to get to the ball, 20-30 instead of 9 or 10. "

Then Ed Griffin (206), an all-star defensive back, has been moved into the fullback slot. Another defensive deep man, Joe Robillard (180) is taking over the wingback slot, while John Lee (190) has shaken off his last year's eligibility problems and is ready to go at split-end.

Odis Avritt, last year's fullback starter is scheduled to be a steady swing man both at this sp0t and at halfback.

Add to that a pair of fine quarterbacks in Terry Durham. (200), who has a slight edge. and Mike Barrow, and the offense should click.

“As far as I’m concerned lshizu is the greatest open field runner there's ever been at Linfield," Durham praised. “And Griffin should be a good back; he can come at you at top speed and cut straight sideways.

“We're strong in depth at quarterback; we’ve never had two that close.” he continued. "Robillard has good hands and because of his size should be a better blocker out there."

In the line, there are some solid performers although Linfield figures to miss Gene Forman, sidelined by an auto accident. He was adjudged the club’s best blocker last year.

This year's leaders include Ray Taylor (250) at tight end, Bob Laycoe (225) at left guard, Brian Petersen (225) at center, Wally Green (230) at strong side guard, Jeff Basinski (240) at inside tackle land Bill Lownsberry (220) at outside tackle. All are lettermen, four of them with two years varsity experience.

Defense Outlined

Despite the weak spots, the defense does have s0me strong performers returning. Jack Ostlund, up 10 pounds to 270 and sophomore Bob Haack, up nearly 25 pounds to 255, brace up the forward wall at tackles. Deno Edwards (240) and Dick Bushnell (205) man the end spots and Tim Brown (210) is situated at Bob Ferguson’s middle guard spot.

John McClaskey (200). Mike Kincaid (170) and Mike Consbruck (200) are the linebackers, with Jim Consbruck (180) at one halfback and Ken Jacroux (185) at safety. Robillard, Griffin and Lee are expected to alternate at the 0ther halfback spot.

Senior Ken Lester (215) is figured to be the chief backup man in the defensive line.

Of this prospective defensive group only five are non-lettermen.

Linfield opens its season Sept. 17, hosting Whitworth in an 8 p.m. game.
