Linfield football 2010 wins post-season NCAA DIII berth

Thanks to a highly informed and inquisitive Wildcatville reader, Wildcatville has learned that Linfield football 2010 has won a post-season NCAA DIII berth.

Although the winner of the Nov. 13, 2010, Willamette at Pacific Lutheran game could tie Linfield for the Northwest Conference championship -- if Linfield loses its game at Lewis & Clark on the same day --Linfield has clinched the NWC's automatic berth in the NCAA Division III football tournament. The clincher was Linfield's Nov. 6, 2010, win over Whitworth on Maxwell Field in McMinnville.

While the NCAA does use tie-breakers to determine automatic tournament berths, the NWC does not use tie-breakers to determine conference champions.

Since Linfield defeated both PLU and Willamette during the 2010 football season, Linfield gets the NCAA berth based on the first tie-breaker (head to head) even if it loses to L&C.
