LINFIELD STUDENT NEWSPAPER: It was ‘Linfield Review,’ in 1968, it became ‘Linews’ (sometimes ‘The Linews’) and, in 1990, it became; 'Linfield Review’ again

“Founded as the Baptist College at McMinnville in 1858 and shortened to McMinnville College in 1883, it became Linfield College in 1922. As of July 1, 2020, Linfield College (became) Linfield University,” said Linfield.edu

The college’s/university’s student newspaper is the Linfield Review. But, it wasn’t always called that. For a while, it was Linews (which morphed into “The Linews.”)

On page 1 of the first Linews, April 25, 1968, was a Linews editorial board message headlined ‘New staff states new policy’ directed to students, faculty members and administration. Message says Linews will “print news which has the most direct impact on the majority of readers.”

A story in the April 27, 1968, Salem, Ore., Oregon Statesman, said, “After 72 years as the Linfield College student newspaper, the Linfield Review, a weekly, has as a new name. “With Thursday’s “ (April 25, 1968) “edition the newspaper becomes Linews.”

The final edition of the newspaper as Linews was March 9, 1990. The name Linfield Review resumed with the newspaper’s March 15, 1990, edition.

An editorial in the March 15, 1990, Review said it reverted from Linews to Linfield Review in part because:

  • the Linews name is one “we have all come to loathe.”
  • the “vast majority of current and past editors of The Linews the past four years have hated the name. We have all considered ‘The Linews’ a sophomoric, cutesy name that doesn’t mesh with this newspaper’s mission to publish the most responsible, informative newspaper we can. We believe we deserve a more dignified title.”
