Even more about Harold Abrams (Linfield Class of 1973, part of Linfield's famous 'Hartford Pipeline') from 1973 Linfield OAK LEAVES yearbook.

Text from 1973 Linfield OAK LEAVES yearbook about Linfield 1972-1973 men’s basketball:

“The Linfield cagers had a wild season scoring some major victories but also recording some disappointing defeats. For example, the 'Cats upset Willamette and Pacific Lutheran only to be knocked off by Pacific and Lewis and Clark. On the opposite page, Wildcat guard Harold Abrams drives to the basket. At the top of the page Abrams puts in two points, while Rob Torresdal knifes through a tough defense at the bottom of the page.”

Harold Abrams: A member of Linfield’s storied ‘Hartford Pipeline’

Harold Abrams: A member of Linfield’s storied ‘Hartford Pipeline’

Harold Abrams came to Linfield after graduating from Hartford, Connecticut, High School.

He was a standout men’s basketball starting guard for the Linfield Wildcats coached by Ted Wilson.

Harold lettered for Linfield basketball in the 1969-1970, 1970-1971, 1971-1972 and 1973-1973 seasons. He’s still in the Linfield basketball record book for assists.

He says two other "Hartford Pipeline" members -- Rick Turner (Class of 1963) and Ed Griffin (Class of 1968) -- were his mentors. “They assured me Linfield was where I needed to be. Attending Linfield was one of the best decisions in my life. Go, Wildcats!"

Harold was praised for his play during the 1972 NAIA District 2 Tip-off Tournament by the Dec 7, 1972, OCE/Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) student newspaper: “The 5'10" senior made the Linfield offense go with his scoring, playmaking, and defense.”

Showing his importance to the Linfield teams on which he played, Harold was on the cover of the 1971-1972 AND 1972-1973 Linfield men's basketball media guides.

Following Linfield graduation, Harold returned to Hartford. After a 30-year career in city government he retired in 2007 as City of Hartford director of parks and recreation.

TRACKING PLAQUES ON LINFIELD CAMPUS: SLEUTHING & STORIES

TRACKING PLAQUES ON LINFIELD CAMPUS: SLEUTHING & STORIES

If you enjoy the history of Linfield, you will enjoy the presentation by McMinnville’s Gretchen Freeman, a library technology consultant, 2 p.m. April 18, 2023, for the Hillside retirement community “Adventures in Learning.”

Her talk will take place in the Hillside Manor ‘Activity Room,” on the ground floor of the Manor apar4tment building on the north end of the Hillside campus, 900 NW Hill Road, McMinnville.

For those who are not Hillside residents, cost to attend is $5 per person payable at the door.

The write-up in an “Adventures in Learning” brochure says during COVID days in 2020, Gretchen and her husband, Mike, Freeman “set out on walks to locate and document the outdoor plaques found on trees and gardens to honor historic notables. Who were they? This first-ever listing, now archived at Linfield, contains photos and stories about the honorees. Learn about some of the discoveries and how to find them on the Linfield campus.”

Guide to the Linfield University Outdoor Plaques Collection

‘Linfield University Outdoor Plaques Inventory’ is the wonderful work/creation of McMinnville residents Gretchen L. & Michael J. Freeman. It was done during the Summer of 2020. It is a finding aid representing a collection of outdoor plaques, stone/bench engravings, plaques, and other memorials found throughout the Linfield University campus in McMinnville. Prior to this there had been no such inventory.

In October 2021, Gretchen Freeman said the 2020 Linfield plaque inventory project "grew from our countless walks on campus during the first year of COVID restrictions when there were no students around. It led to about 60 hours of research to compile the documentation of 34 plaques. We also did narrated walking tours for groups of friends. All very interesting discoveries."

WILDCATVILLE SEEKS 1984 LINFIELD FOOTBALL NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP POSTER

WILDCATVILLE SEEKS 1984 LINFIELD FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP POSTER

See photos posted here ... click on each image to see a larger version.

Are you familiar with the two Whitnell auto dealership sponsored Linfield Football NAIA Championships posters?

=One poster celebrates Linfield’s 1984 NAIA Football National Championship “Come Back Victory.”

=The other poster celebrates the 1982, 1984 and 1986 Linfield Football teams which won NAIA National Championships. Coach Ad Rutschman is quoted on this poster: “It’s Tough to Get on Top, and Once You Get There it’s Tough to Stay.”

Linfield Archives -- part of the Linfield’s Nicholson Library -- does not have copies of these two posters. I think it should.

Assisting Linfield Archives, Wildcatville will soon have access to a  1982-1984-1986 poster. But, Wildcatville still needs the 1982 poster.

Do you have the 1984 poster? If so, could Wildcatville please borrow it so Linfield Archives may scan it and return the poster to you? Or, better yet, please consider donating your 1984 poster to Linfield Archives?

Please contact me by email:

Decades of Dodge under the Withnell name end, Roberson acquires franchise

Story by Les Zaitz, Salem Reporter, March 2, 2023. Photos by Ron Cooper.

The lot is bare – not a diesel pickup truck in sight.

The show room is empty – not a deal in the making anywhere.

Salem’s auto industry has seen the closure of an era with the shuttering of the Withnell Dodge dealership, a mainstay on Southeast Commercial Street.

Now, Dodges and Rams will be parked at Roberson Motors, which reported on its website that it had acquired the franchise effective March 1. That dealership is on Southeast Ryan Drive at Mission Street.

“It’s just the right time” according to a Facebook post from David Withnell, who succeeded his father Dick as owner of the franchise in 2002.

The family company will continue to operate Withnell Hyundai at 1996 Mission St. S.E.

The acquisition brings together two long-time Salem families from the auto world.

Earl Roberson founded Roberson Motors in 1961, operating for years on a site between the Marion and Center Street bridges in downtown Salem. His son Mike, succeeded him and now a third generation, Brett Roberson, is an owner of the company.

Roberson said he’s long had a “friendly, competitive” relationship with Dave Withnell and they talked for years about merging or one buying out the other.

Roberson noted the “dual facilities” to sell and service vehicles that the two dealerships had to maintain. He said changes in the auto industry in recent years made a combination a good move.

“Franchises have kind of changed. There are fewer competing vehicles,” Roberson said. “We used to compete along certain model lines” but such side-by-side models under different brands have been disappearing.

“It’s really difficult to survive without all the brands,” Roberson said. “The dream was for one of us to put all the brands together.”

He said the deal to acquire the Withnell franchise was set in motion a few months ago with a call from Dave Withnell. Roberson was receptive.

“It’s been a dream of our family to have Dodge and Ram,” Roberson said.

Dick Withnell, who bought the Dodge dealership in 1980, said the deal “just made sense. Roberson has a great reputation.”

He said that “business wise, I have no second thoughts. I was just a straight up business transaction that was a win-win.”

To reflect the change, Roberson has modified its name to Roberson Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram.

He said the Mission Street site can handle the increase in inventory, but some building expansion is likely in the coming months.

On moving day, drivers shuttled about 80 vehicles from the Withnell dealership to the Mission Street location.

“It was a fun day,” he said.

Withnell, a Salem philanthropist and volunteer, bought the dealership in 1980 from Emerson Teague.

Withnell recounted his evolution into the car business in an oral history recorded last year at his alma mater, Linfield College.

He described time in the banking business, including handling repossessed cars, before going into the car business in Salem in 1972. He has often cited Lee Iaccoca, who led Chrysler from 1978 until 1992, as a mentor

He has continued serving a variety of nonprofit boards and contributing to nonprofits.

Roberson said his father and Withnell often collaborated on charitable projects, such as helping fund the new Union Gospel Mission in Salem.

Withnell still maintains his memento-filled office at the dealership building on Commercial. He said he’ll be considering what to do with the 4.5-acre site that he and his wife, Gayle, own.

“Maybe when they get full at the convention center, we can offer parking,” Withnell joked.
