PLEASE WRITE LINFIELDER GENE 'ACE' FORMAN' IN SALEM, OREGON

Please write Gene "Ace" Forman, a Linfielder (Class of 1967, M.Ed., 1968) and outstanding tackle for the football Wildcats.

It was an auto accident which left Gene Forman paralyzed from the waist down. The accident happened in August 1965 when he was a Linfield senior. Ace was attending Linfield summer classes and also pitching for a Portland baseball team. The team had a game on a Sunday night in Longview, Wash. – about 88 miles from McMinnville. The team needed Forman to pitch because "the other pitchers couldn’t,” Ace said in an Oct. 1, 1974, Oregonian story.

"After I got off National Guard duty I drove to Longview for the game. On the way home I feel asleep (on Highway 18) while driving three miles outside of McMinnville. The car went off the road and into a ditch.” Thrown from the car, he broke his neck. A Linfield football teammate, who made the trip with him from McMinnville, was in the car, too. The teammate suffered a chipped tooth.

747 outside in front of McMinnville’s Evergreen Aviation Museum will be sold at auction

Officials with the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville plan to do whatever they can to save the iconic jumbo jet parked in front of the museum.

McMINNVILLE, Ore. — The landmark Boeing 747 airliner parked in front of the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum will go up for auction later this summer, but officials with the museum in McMinnville are determined to save it. 

The plane has been there for years and is an essential piece of history, said museum board chair Wayne Marshall. He's also president of McMinnville Properties, which owns the land the museum is on.  

"In 2020 when my company purchased all 300 acres of land and buildings on this campus, we discovered that the museum didn't have title to the aircraft," he said. 

Marshall said the abandoned jumbo jet has been tied up in several bankruptcies, most recently the bankruptcy of the plane's current owner, a company called Jet Midwest.

"What we've had to do is figure out how we can get control of it so it can stay with the museum," Marshall said.

Marshall said the plane is like a big billboard for the museum, and that's just what museum needs now that visitor traffic is recovering to pre-pandemic levels after struggling with attendance for the past two years. 

He said he does not expect to get outbid during the auction, which is set to be held in July, in part because taking the plane anywhere else would be a challenge.

"If somebody wants to write a big check, they can acquire the aircraft," he said. "They're going to have to move it. The aircraft doesn't have any engines, so it's not going anywhere."

Cindee Oback was visiting the museum on Thursday and said she does not want to see the plane go.

"I think if they're trying to save it, it should be saved," Oback said. "Don't get rid of historical landmarks."

More than two acres in size, the floor will experience use by more than 500 square dancers expected for the huge festival.”

==COMMENT: As it is now (2022) it was then (1962), Maxwell Field is the name of Linfield’s football field.  Note a partial view of the Linfield football scoreboard. (See cropped photo below.) Some remember the lower part of the board was painted light purple.

Linfielder Terry Durham will wait until Oct. 9, 2022, to be inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame

Linfielder Terry Durham (Class of 1967), a retired NBA/National Basketball Association referee, and others will be inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum as members of the ‘Class if 2022’ in October 2022 instead of July 31, 2022.

Officials of the “Hall” said the air conditioning system for the event’s venue – the Providence Park Key Bank Club at Providence Park in downtown Portland -is inoperative. It will not be repaired until after the original event date, July 31.

Oregon Sports Hall of Fame Postpones Annual Induction Ceremony

Event Moved to October 9, 2022 at Providence Park

The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum postponed its induction ceremony until October 9, 2022.

Originally scheduled for July 31 at Providence Park Key Bank Club, their air conditioning system has broken down and cannot be repaired until parts arrive from off shore. Coupled with severe heatwave weather conditions, we’ve elected to postpone the event until October, according to Mike Rose, induction ceremony chairman. Paid ticket holders may attend the October event with their current tickets, and refunds are available if requested.

The event will include not only Timber Joey, but also mascots from other professional and collegiate teams from around the region. Among those invited are Barley from the Hillsboro Hops, Blaze from the Portland Trail Blazers, the Oregon Duck and Benny Beaver, the Portland Pilot and PSU Viking….and many more. A piper and drummer will add to the color and fun of the tailgate reception. Guests are encouraged to dress casual and sport their favorite team colors while enjoying traditional tailgate fare and refreshments.

The Tailgate Party Reception begins at 2 PM, with the Awards Ceremony following at 4:00 PM MC’d by Dwight Jaynes. Tickets are $65 per person. Guests may enter through gate C, on the SW 18th Avenue side of the stadium. (Handicap drop off parking at Gate A). May 16, 2022, The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum has announced its 2022 class of inductees. According to Mike Rose, induction ceremony chairman, the Hall of Fame will induct eight new members to join close to 400 prior inductees. 

The presentations will be made in Portland at the Key Bank Club at Providence Park., Sunday, July 31. Back live again after the pandemic virtual event last year, a special Stadium Tailgate Cocktail Reception will precede the awards presentation and will take place outdoors on the Key Bank Club Plaza, which opens out to the Providence Park soccer pitch.

Ace is currently recovering from a surgery he had yesterday for a bed sore that has become infected. He had a similar surgery a year ago. He is in the Salem Hospital for a week or until they can find a place that can take care of antibiotic IVs.

He was somewhat groggy but shared with me that the doctor has given him one to four weeks to live.

Can't imagine not having our dear friend with us. He is so loved and respected by so many. At his retirement dinner there were 350 individuals who felt their lives were better because of him. We know ours were.

He is our son's and his son's Godfather. When our other grandkids met him they all wanted him to be their Godfather.

He's been an important part of our lives and so many others.
