remember that you had some great memories of football days with Dean from his
service last year. Our family has set up
an athletic scholarship in his honor at Newberg High School. The athletic department is hosting a game on
September 21st 7:00 pm at the high school to raise money for his scholarship
fund, and our family was hoping that you and any other Linfield alum who are
able to make it could join us in celebrating his legacy. We aren't sure how to contact others from
your time at Linfield, but if you are able to reach out to teammates who knew
Dean we would really appreciate it!

FOOTBALL 1965 PLAYOFFS in Midland, Texas, Linfield at Sul Ross State. On Nov.
27, 1965, Linfield upset Sul Ross, 30-27. In that game, Linfield’s Dean Pade had,
according to Bob Ferguson, “clutch, big time catches …. We distinctly remember, like it was yesterday,
Dean dragging both feet while catching the football and going out of bounds to
stop the clock.”

OBITUARY

1944 - January 12, 2017
SHERWOOD,
Oregon - Virgil "Dean" Pade, beloved teacher at Newberg High School
for 22 years and football coach at Linfield College, died Thursday at the age
of 73.
Born and
raised in Salem, he was a graduate of the 1962 Class of North Salem High
School. A member of the Class of 1966 at Linfield College, Dean played football
under Paul Durham and in 1965, he was a member of the Wildcats football team
that played in the National Championships, an honor he would repeat three times
later in life as a coach — in 1982, 1984 and 1986.
Dean
started his teaching career at Centennial High School and was an assistant
football coach there. He helped coach the Eagles to victory in the 1972 State
Championships. In 1976, he took the Head Coach role at Newberg High School,
where he would teach health and drivers education for 22 years.
Pade is an
inductee to the Linfield College Football Hall of Fame for his contributions as
a player and a coach.
Retirement
was short-lived, as Dean could not sit still for long. He started his own
Drivers Education School, guiding hundreds of local teens to successfully earn
their licenses.
His
passing spurred an outpouring of appreciation and love from countless students
whose lives he touched. Warm sentiments lit up the winter day, brighter than
the snow: "He was my most memorable teacher," "kept me in
line," "my teacher, my mentor, my friend."
Dean is
survived by his son Troy and son-in-law Marcus Rettig of New York City,
daughter Erin Pade of Scottsdale, AZ, sister Rose Ellen Long and brother-in-law
William of Bend, niece Maggie Long of Portland, and nephew Hoyt Long of
Chicago.
A
Celebration of Life was held this past Saturday in Wilsonville.
